Sweden Protest

Sweden protests against EU fishing on the Western Sahara coast

EU has concluded a deal about fishing in the waters outside the Moroccan coast that includes also fishing in the Western Sahara territory, which according to the UN is occupied.

Sweden is protesting against this and sees that this deal goes against the international law.
Sweden was the only country that voted no to the suggestion about the fishing agreement with Morocco, when the EU countries ministers of fishing met in Brussels this Monday.

The reason is that this agreement also includes Western Sahara, an area that according to the UN is illegally occupied by Morocco.

“Western Sahara is not part of Morocco, the people there have the right to decide themselves over their natural resources, we stand up for our principles and therefore we voted no”. Said minister of agriculture Ann-Christin Nykvist.

She concludes that “the EU countries have signed the UN decision to classify Western Sahara as an occupied territory and means that the other countries are not consistent when they vote for this agreement”.
